in chapter six, it states that documentaries and features are adaptable to programming for racial and ethnic groups and if you don't have sufficient firsthand knowledge and emotional understanding for a certain group or aren't a member of that group, you may not be able to craft a good script depicting such a group. I guess that's why some movies turn out to be so controversial.

The same idea applies to LGBT people in TV shows. Most of the portrayals are one dimensional and shallow rather than accurate and representative of reality.
