Chapter 7: Interview and Talk Programs

In regards to the structure and technique of interviewing, I have a question. What happens if you do (accidentally) offend the interviewee, or if you ask a question they straight up do NOT want to answer, or if you ended up getting your research wrong after all? If the interview is live, it seems like it would be an embarrassing and difficult situation to get out of. (Live tv would scare me!) How do they correct things like that?

Since it is live, I am not sure it can be corrected. Just have to go with the flow and change the subject. After that, hope that it is not on YouTube for laughs.

Piers Morgan ran into this issue when he made transphobic comments... Live... In front of the five or ten people who actually watch his show.

Offending the interviewee is a disaster.

Generally what happens is nothing, maybe a half assed apology.

Personally, I just go ahead and talk to them prior to the interview to let them the kind of questions I will ask. In my experience, I have found out that it is your responsibility as an interviewer to save any uncomfortable situation by diplomatically changing the subject or shifting the question in a different direction.
