After reading through Chapter 4, I started to think about the ads on YouTube. The other day I was in class and we watched a video... but first an ad played. Everyone was like "SKIP... SKIP" before it really even started. We all significantly block out commercials, and, lately, if we aren't ignoring them completely we are simply being annoyed by them. A friend of mind was expressing how upset he was that they play commercials in the movie theaters now. He said it makes it feel "trashy" or just not as classy as just playing "interesting" movie previews.

This pattern of annoyance shows up everywhere: we skip through commercials on television if we've recorded the show. But if we HAVEN'T recorded it, it's very annoying for things to constantly be interrupted. Similarly, on websites, they have pop up ads, or ads that display on the actual page until you close out of them. It's all distracting and busy.

I'm not wondering how to catch the audience's attention (that's an everlasting battle, it seems!)... but rather, I'm wondering how to create a commercial without absolutely ANNOYING the consumer. Is it possible even? Because annoying the consumer just seems to make everything take a step back. You aren't selling them anything, you're pushing them away.
